Why I Wrote Keep the Green Light On

I wrote Keep the Green Light On because enterprise failures are rarely caused by one weak device or one bad command. They are often created by fragmented ownership, incomplete evidence, rushed decisions, organizational pressure, and exhausted people.
The book follows the engineers and leaders of the fictional NexCore Systems as they introduce AgenticClick™, an Agentic AI operations solution capable of correlating evidence across networks, cloud platforms, applications, security controls, change records, and operational memory.
But the central question is not whether AgenticClick is intelligent.
The central question is:
What should it be authorized to do?
AgenticClick can identify patterns faster than a human team. It can collect evidence, estimate blast radius, propose remediation, create a rollback plan, and validate recovery.
It can also be confidently wrong.
That tension drives the story.
The engineers must learn that model confidence is not proof. Leaders must learn that urgency does not eliminate risk. The AI must operate within rules that remain reliable even when the model, provider, context, or human request is unreliable.
The story is also about life outside the operations bridge.
Daniel Carter is an experienced engineer whose identity has become connected to always being needed. Every emergency proves his value at work while taking something away from his family. His journey asks a difficult question:
Is an operation truly successful if it keeps production healthy by exhausting the people responsible for it?
The phrase Keep the Green Light On therefore has two meanings.
Keep the infrastructure available.
And build an operating model where engineers can still have healthy lives outside the infrastructure.
